What should the Ducks expect from TCU without QB Trevone Boykin?
Trevone Boykin, the former West Mesquite High School standout and star quarterback at TCU, issued a public apology on Thursday evening following his overnight arrest in San Antonio and subsequent suspension from Saturday’s Valero Alamo Bowl game.
As News4 San Antonio reported, Boykin was arrested and allegedly “indiscriminately hit an officer”.
Boykin was charged with assaulting a public servant, a third-degree felony. Police said an altercation inside spilled into the street, and ended when Boykin took a swing and made contact with a police officer on bike patrol.
“It’s never good to get in trouble the day before the game but that’s the way it is I guess”, one TCU fan lamented.
The one-time Heisman Trophy candidate was suspended from Saturday’s Alamo Bowl between the 11th-ranked Horned Frogs and No. 15 Oregon.
At a Thursday morning news conference, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus confirmed reports that TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin, 22, and some teammates were in an establishment named Pat O’Brien’s just before 2 a.m. when some patrons recognized the quarterback and began to trash-talk. According to that NBC 5 report, Boykin was taken to the ground by multiple officers.
Boykin was scheduled to meet with reporters Thursday afternoon as part of the Alamo Bowl media schedule. He was being heckled regarding the game.
Patterson said he has suspended Boykin and receiver Preston Miller from playing in the Bowl game with OR because the players violated team rules. Even after walking away, Boykin went back to the scene and charged officers, striking one in the face.
Boykin is a senior who passed for 3,575 yards with 31 touchdowns.
Officers said they then spotted him swinging at other officers who came to assist.
TCU will take on OR at 6:45 PM ET on ESPN.
