Thousands expected to plunge into icy waters in annual ‘Polar Bear Swim’
The ocean temperature was barely 40 degrees, but those taking part in the Natural Resources Council of Maine’s Polar Plunge at Portland’s East End Beach say they would jump at the chance to take part in it – in any weather.
It’s nearly that time again when polar bear swimmers will grab their suits and head into the water as a way to start the New Year refreshed and rejuvenated. “With respect to the water levels in the Schuylkill, they’ll be able to advise us that day”, said Lenhart.
But Lenhart doesn’t seem too anxious. “You can expect that with any type of event that goes on on the river”, said Lenhart. Every year since 1982 Chris Swarts has been either a Polar Bear swimmer or an event organizer. There will also be a Christmas tree toss and a small cash prize for the victor.
The plunge is a free public event and does not require registration.
Starting in Peachland, the start of a new year will be celebrated with a splash into Okanagan Lake.
Those planning on going in the water are to meet at Knechtel Foods restaurant at 12:45 in readiness for the 1:00 p.m. run as a group along the marked path to the water. “It’s a simple event with a lot of benefits in that respect”.
