LeSean McCoy expected to miss Bills finale against Jets
One thing is certain, for better or worse Rex Ryan is a coach who always says what’s on his mind.
The Jets, in their first season under coach Todd Bowles, are facing a win-and-in scenario against the Buffalo Bills and their former coach, who was sacked after failing to lead NY to the postseason in each of the last four of his six seasons.
“The Super Bowl is next week for us”, said Bills running back Anthony “Boobie” Dixon, referring to Sunday’s finale against the New York Jets, a do-or-die game for the guys in green who can grab a wild-card playoff berth with a win.
Ryan Fitzpatrick had a poor game against the Bills as well. Sometimes having a first-ballot HOF quarterback can’t win you every game though; this was certainly apparent last week against the New York Jets.
The New York Jets clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2010 with a victory. “So I’m not surprised” that the joking about him being the Jets’ MVP “was said at all”. “I think I do it this way because I am more comfortable with it”. That means just like last week, when players like Mike Gillislee and A.J. Tarpley were able to make strong impressions, some other young Bills will get a chance to show their stuff.
Make no mistake, the Bills may have nothing to play for in this game, but Rex Ryan would love nothing more then to spoil the Jets playoff hopes. But the Jets went on to miss the playoffs each of the following four seasons, finishing.
“It’s just the next game on the schedule”, cornerback Darrelle Revis said, downplaying the matchup.
Earlier in the season, Head Coach Rex Ryan and his boys in blue triumphed over NY in a very exciting game. While Ryan was clearly excited by the win, he also predicted the teams’ next meeting would probably help decide who goes to the playoffs. Ryan maintained on Monday that facing his former team added no extra meaning to the final game. And despite a disappointing rookie season with the Bills, Ryan will be back next season – and it sounds like general manager Doug Whaley will too – according to team owner and CEO Terry Pegula. A 4-1 start was washed away by inconsistency, lost opportunities and a search for answers. “There really is no pressure”. “We just have to keep rolling”. There’s no pressure on us. We know that. But you have a head coach that’s been a defensive coordinator and a head coach for 11-plus years. Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, has played in six cities over his 10 National Football League seasons. He has thrown for 1,525 yards and 13 touchdowns with one interception. The New York Jets ground game is averaging 116.4 yards per contest, and Chris Ivory leads the way with 989 yards and seven touchdowns.
“Fitz has been incredible for us”, Pace said. He reached 101 receptions on the season and holds the Jets’ franchise record for most receptions in a single season, eclipsing Al Toon’s 93 receptions in 1988.
“I just wasn’t pleased with the majority of my performance”, Fitzpatrick said. “I don’t know, but I think the players have done a good job of incrementally improving”.
The 52-year-old had lofty ambitions for the season at the beginning of his tenure in January but the Bills failed to advance to the play-offs for a 16th straight year. “We were in those games in the middle of the season”.
It’s as routine as the interview tactics from both coaches. Bowles feels none of that stuff is needed at this point with so much on the line.
We’ll see whether this causes Rex to change his approach. We don’t. We’re going to go out there and play as hard as we possibly can. “The main thing if you look we’ve got 10 starters out”.
