Minimum wages going up in New York State
Starting tomorrow the lowest paid in the state will get a little more in their paychecks.
The Attorney General’s Fair Labor Division enforces laws that protect workers, including minimum wage, payment of wages, overtime, tip pooling, child labor, Sunday and holiday premium pay, and the public construction bid laws.
The average family income for a minimum wage worker is over $50,000 per year, as most minimum wage workers are earning supplemental income for their entire household.
Starting on New Year’s Day, Michigan workers making the minimum wage will see a 35 cent hourly raise from $8.15 to $8.50 per hour.
The minimum wage is set to increase again in 2017 to $11. This includes food service workers, service employees, and service employees in resort hotels, Mr. Cuomo’s office said in a statement.
In the third of three annual changes secured by Governor Cuomo in 2013, New York State’s minimum wage will be $9.00 per hour.

Wages will be different from the standard $9 an hour for tipped hospitality workers and workers in fast-food chains.
On Thursday, the state’s minimum wage increases to $9 an hour from $8.75.
In November, Cuomo announced he would apply the same increases to state employees.
The state labor department estimates 12,000 jobs in Alaska now pay less than that.
“Thousands of New Yorkers are still struggling to make ends meet and lift themselves out of poverty because the minimum wage is simply too low”, said Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers.
“It’s good news”, said Mr. Paredes, 39, who lives in Brooklyn and said he plans to use the extra money for subway fare and other things that have risen in price.
The state on January 1 is increasing the Minimum Wage Reimbursement Tax Credit offered to employers to help offset some of the increased wage costs.
He criticized the “sort of ridiculous statements” from the business community claiming a wage increase will result in job loss.
