George Lucas: I’m too old to make more Star Wars movies
He is now apologizing for the remark. Those comments can be found around the 50-minute mark in the above video.
Once Disney took over and began working on Episode VII in the space sage, Lucas told the CBS newsman it was clear the conglomerate wasn’t “that keen to have me involved anyway” and was “going to do their own thing” with future “Star Wars” movies.
Since The Force Awakens is a record shattering and acclaimed hit despite some criticisms, it may validate those who celebrated Lucas staying away.
Despite Lucas’ critique of the “retro” aspect of the The Force Awakens, it seems both fans and critics like it. The movie has received generally positive reviews, and made billion in record time.
In his interview with Rose, Lucas described distancing himself from the series as akin to a “break-up” with a lover. “I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologise”, he said. “I made them completely different with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new”.
The record was achieved in large part to a big end-of-the-year push from Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“, which has become the film event of the year, breaking multiple box office records and raking in more than $540 million in the USA since opening on December 18. Different approaches, but many would argue that “The Force Awakens” was more successful than some of Lucas’ six films when it comes to character, pace, and story. “I loved them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them”, said the 71-year-old. “And so I said, “Okay, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way”, he said.
“It’s a very, very, very hard thing to do”, said Lucas about letting go of the franchise, as well as another famous Lucasfilm property that is now Disney’s, “Indiana Jones”.
In the statement, Lucas says Disney is moving the franchise in exciting directions.
“Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise”, Lucas said in a statement. Lucas did not finish his thought (49 minutes in to the clip below), but rather laughed before Rose moved on to another question. Yet the first one without Lucas is setting the bar by being on pace to be the highest grossing film of all time, perhaps by this time next week. It was for the Kennedy Center Honors and conducted prior to the premiere of the film.
