Coli outbreak likely over
All microbial testing performed by Chipotle, including more than 2,500 samples of ingredients, restaurant surfaces and equipment, did not yield E. coli, the FDA said. “We are now in the process of implementing those programs…”, Chris Arnold, Chipotle communications director, said in an email to CNN, emphasizing that the CDC does not know whether the new cases are linked.
Just a week after Chipotle announced new safety measures and issued an apology to media outlets across the nation, five more people have reportedly fallen ill from coming into contact with E. coli bacteria after eating Chipotle in Kansas, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.
“We have indicated before that we expected that we may see additional cases stemming from this, and the CDC is now reporting some additional cases”.
An outbreak of E. coli linked to rotisserie chicken salad sold by warehouse club operator Costco Wholesale Corp appears to be over, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said on Tuesday.
Chipotle has been linked to a previous E.coli outbreak that has sickened 53 people in nine states with a different strain since late October.
The Tulsa County Health Department is also investigating after learning of the E. coli cases in the state.
Following the outbreak, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has said it is tightening standards to ensure food safety.
Separately, a group of at least 80 students at Boston College fell ill after eating at a Chipotle in what is believed to be a third group of food poisonings.
The CDC said Monday three people ate at an Oklahoma location and one each in Kansas and North Dakota locations.
“While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, ” he said earlier this month.
The Food and Drug Administration conducted a traceback investigation of the FDA-regulated ingredients used in the chicken salad to try to determine which ingredient was linked to illness. Arnold added that the company thinks the illnesses are connected to the larger, previously reported outbreak.
