Al Jazeera reporter: We didn’t allege Manning used HGH
With his casual statements about supplying all manner of performance-enhancing drugs to big-name professional athletes, Sly endangered a swatch of moneyed interests.
The allegation is at the heart of a accusations and secret-filming in a report by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit. In the transcripts, a Guyer Institute employee said that “it looks like [Sly] was here in the fall of 2011”.
Guyer said Sly had no patient responsibilities and has had no affiliation with the clinic since his unpaid internship from February-May 2013. She says the report only claims that Manning’s wife, Ashley, received packages of HGH. At worst, Al Jazeera just let Charlie Sly, who is essentially a drug dealer trying to sell his stuff, lead viewers to a conclusion it did not clarify until days later, in a way that is only technically defensible. “It would always be under her name”, said Sly. That story will always be around now, and a certain number of people will believe it, and Peyton Manning’s reputation will never be quite the same.
In a video statement posted on YouTube, Sly recanted his story.
The big question: Why did Al Jazeera, which claims to be a serious news organization, run with a report that contained an utterly unsupported charge against one of the greatest football players of our time?
“We told Al Jazeera that and they don’t seem to be concerned with the truth”, Cartmel said. “I have not heard anyone deny that”.
“Any medical treatments that my wife received, that’s her business”, he said. Manning fired back quickly and aggressively, calling the report “complete garbage” and discussing the possibility of suing Al Jazeera for defamation. “It never happened. Never”, Manning said in a statement released by the Broncos.
The Denver Broncos quarterback said he never used a human growth hormone (HGH) and called the report – which alleges steroids and other drugs were shipped to Manning’s home in his wife’s name – “completely fabricated” and “complete trash”. He’s a guy that I can always count on and he’s been someone who has always been so supportive of me.
“I’ve known Peyton Manning since he was 17 years old and have been around him most of his adult life”. You hate to see your good friends go through anything like that. Also implicated were Major League Baseball players Ryan Howard of the Phillies and Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals. “Nobody has more respect for Peyton than I do”. “He’s like, ‘I really appreciate you guys working with me, ‘ ” Sly tells Collins of the quarterback’s approach.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning may be rivals on the field, but the Patriots quarterback is showing his support for his “good friend” off the field amidst his latest controversy.
The WEEI hosts then asked if Brady would reach out directly to Manning and offer him any advice or lessons learned in dealing with the Deflategate saga.
That said, Brady was quick to throw his support behind his longtime rival and friend.
