This game had an interesting story line because Nussmeier, the Florida offensive coordinator, worked at MI past year.

A pair of potent South Florida quarterbacks will duel on New Year’s Day, and Florida coach Jim McElwain is making sure his is ready for the fight.

Jake Rudock threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Michigan’s defense dominated throughout in the No. 17 Wolverines’ victory over No. 19 Florida on Friday in the Citrus Bowl.

It was in this same stadium and on this same date in 1998 that Kelvin’s father, Fred Taylor, made his memorable Gator farewell, rushing for a Citrus Bowl-record 234 yards on 43 carries in Florida’s 21-6 victory over Penn State.

“It was a case of getting your rump kicked in”.

While McElwain’s approach and demeanor is certainly more playful than Harbaugh’s sometimes fiery antics on the field, no one can argue with the results he’s produced in his first season. “They really took it to us on both sides of the ball”.

Florida had 245 total yards in the first half, but only could manage one touchdown in its three red-zone appearances.

And I think they’ve gotten a taste that now what you really have to do in preparation, in personal preparation, moving forward”, he said. It was a family decision, but we’re comfortable with it. I feel like that’s going to be the best decision for me and my family for my future.

Give the Gators credit for winning the SEC East, but don’t forget the SEC East was exceptionally weak this year. “We got a little complacent”.

“Yeah, you know it is”, McElwain said.

Florida had a chance to tie the game on its next drive, but Harris threw an ill-advised interception in the end zone.

MI took a 17-7 lead into halftime thanks largely to the efficiency of the Wolverines’ passing attack. The three and outs, the stops, the play on third down, everybody playing great team defense.

To that end, Rudock finished the season at No. 2 on the all-time list of MI passers in terms of single-season yardage with 3,017, and he was almost ideal in the final contest. And, when you think about UF there haven’t been many classes that haven’t played a game in that dome for an SEC championship.

Two legitimate playmakers emerged alongside wide receiver Demarcus Robinson in sophomore slot receiver Brandon Powell and freshman Antonio Callaway.
