Eli Manning and Giants motivated to get a new deal done
Paul-Pierre injured his right hand in a freak fireworks accident during the 4th of July weekend that resulted into an amputated index finger and a fractured thumb. That would give Manning the security of a long-term deal and potentially allow him finish his career in New York.
“The quarterbacks always get done”, Condon told the News.
The deal could come over the next few weeks, according to the report, and could possibly be around five years and $99 million, which was the deal that Ben Roethlisberger signed during the off-season. Per Ralph Vacchiano of NYDailyNews.com, there will be a strong push to get something with Manning’s contract done “sooner rather than later”.
Manning is now scheduled to make $17 million with a $19.1 million cap hit in the final season of a six-year, $97 million contract he signed back in 2009.
Manning has been the Giants starting quarterback since relieving the struggling Kurt Warner in the 2004 season.
JPP and his situation is still being resolved and he likely will wait until he can pass a physical to sign his deal and show up. Beckham could be held out while dealing with a hamstring issue, but he also dealt with that last season and was fine once healthy.
The resurgence despite being 34 could be reason enough for the Giants to extend Manning’s contract before the start of the 2015 season. Additionally, per Rapoport, a raise and extension for Manning could help the team’s salary cap number.
A team source said “there has been conversation” between the Giants and Manning’s representation, but would not attach any increased urgency to the talks. Manning’s contract should be pretty similar to Ben Roethlisberger’s who was drafted the same season as Manning.
Manning set career-highs and Giants franchise records in passing attempts (601), completions (379) and completion percentage (63.1).
