Bills said planning to cut Mario Williams in offseason
Well, that and the firing of the shots at Williams, which several anonymous Bills did while talking to Ty Dunne of the Buffalo News did recently.
Again, Williams still has his supporters – you can read positive quotes about his 2015 season from the likes of Preston Brown, Leodis McKelvin, defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, and others in the original article – but clearly, Williams has mixed reviews from the organization this season.
On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that the Buffalo Bills plan to part ways with defensive end Mario Williams in the offseason. It’s unlikely that the Bills will have a whole lot of cap space to acquire players with the knowledge necessary to function well in Ryan’s defense, but they need to squeeze all they can out of what’s available while hitting multiple home runs in the draft.
At the same time, the person said veteran defensive tackle Kyle Williams’ job is safe, so long as he recovers from a season-ending left knee injury he sustained in a 34-21 loss to Cincinnati on October 18.
That’s why it’s crucial for the Bills to clear cap space, and cutting Williams provides an easy way for the Bills to open a large chunk of space under their 2016 cap. He has a $12.9 million cap number for next season, and his fit in Rex Ryan’s scheme has not been wonderful. Last season, Mario had a career best 14.5 sacks. Watt (51.5 sacks), Justin Houston (43.0) and Robert Quinn (40.0).
As Mario Williams (reportedly) prepares to play his last game for the Bills on Sunday, one of his teammates – under the cloak of anonymity – is ripping Williams to shreds publicly. Particularly considering Williams has been such a non-factor this season.
As the highest-paid player on the team, more is expected from Williams, especially when the team is not playing up to expectations. The only reason they traded for Jared Allen is that they are a Super Bowl contender who badly needed some pass rush.
Still, it’s clear there has been a disconnect between what Ryan wants to do defensively and how Williams envisions himself as a player.
