Quake hits near Victoria
The quake was centred about 20 kilometres north of Victoria. The USGS reports that the natural disaster had a depth of 50 kilometres.
No tsunami, injuries or damage were expected from the quake, and BC Hydro did not report any power outages as a result.
Geophysicist John Cassidy with the Sidney, B.C.-based Geological Survey of Canada noted the quake was between 50 and 60 kilometres below the southeast coast of Vancouver Island.
As recently as 2012 a 7.7 Magnitude quake rattled the Haida Gwaii region, and in 1947, the province was the target of one of Canada’s deadliest earthquakes.
The USGS website has recorded more than 10,000 reports of the quake being felt. He says he hasn’t heard of any major damage or recorded any aftershocks.
