CES 2016 Will Be Dedicated To Virtual Reality – Here Is Why
According to documents filed with the Nevada DMV, Kia has filed permits to operate two autonomous Kia Soul EVs in the state, while Hyundai has applied for the same permit for a Santa Fe (although it won’t be appearing at CES since it alternates displaying at the show each year with sister auto maker Kia). These new security measures will only add to the crowds although if they can thwart a potential terrorist attack, waiting a few more minutes to get into the show each day is a worthy tradeoff. Audi has a new concept auto in the wings, and its partner Volkswagen may be showing off a new Microbus.
As part of a new wave of California-based electric automakers, Faraday Future will launch its first-ever concept vehicle at this year’s CES.
Ford will introduce details of the electronics in the GT. Ford will also show off its latest developments in connectivity and autonomous vehicle research. Past year saw Nest reveal partnerships with no less than 15 organisations, as well as a new smart thermostat that was able to talk to other products around the home.
Suppliers also will play a major role at the show.
“Intel’s innovations, which power tablets, wearables, PCs, smart cars, homes, appliances, cloud computing and so much more are serving as the foundation for the burgeoning Internet of Things”, said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, which sponsors the event. But I have seen CES evolve significantly over this time, and its role in our tech world continues to be important and, in my view, still very relevant. The company has already confirmed it’s going to be an electrified vehicle, so maybe it will serve as a sneak preview for an electric minivan. The rumors spread after Volkswagen revealed teaser images of the concept, which even in it’s covers gave the impression of a a boxy van or SUV, rather than a vehicle. But GM, which last year at CES unveiled its 2016 Chevrolet Volt hybrid, will still be prominent at this year’s event.
From smartphones to tablet computers, manufacturers have queued up to showcase the latest technological advances. With Google and Apple both throwing their weight behind specialist in-car software, now is the time for carmakers and developers alike to show they can compete. From a $6,000 Lamborghini smartphone to a Qualcomm-powered drone, the show had something for everyone, and we’re expecting this year’s show to be just the same. Who knows what will be next – connected hair straighteners? Their increased presence is kind of deja vu for me: In the early 1990s, the giant Japanese players started embracing CES in a big way.
