Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson leaves Oakland on a high note
His season & his 18-year profession are virtually over as well, so the Raiders sent him off in a heroic fashion throughout his last home game. And in Week 17, the Raiders will travel to Kansas City with an opportunity to finish with a non-losing record for the first time since 2011.
Sebastian Janikowski made a 31-yard field goal with 8:04 left in overtime, and the Raiders held on for a 23-20 victory against the San Diego Chargers at the O.co Coliseum. Quarterback Philip Rivers’ pass on fourth-and-3 fell incomplete, sealing the Raiders’ win. A loud ovation for No. 24, possibly the only time a 3-yard loss in overtime has produced such a roaring response.
Carr shook off a bad night to throw a dime, a 3-yard pass to Crabtree perfectly placed over the defender.
With the lead and needing one more stop to preserve a win for Woodson and to sendoff the fans at the Coliseum for the season, the Raiders defense dug deep and forced a three and out to close the game.
“I can’t end my career with negative three yards”, Woodson joked. That seemed to pay off when Rivers appeared to hit Ladarius Green for a 30-yard touchdown pass on the next play. NOT ONE. And yet, they still managed to take the game to overtime.
The injury-riddled Chargers lost several more players to injuries, including cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring), safety Eric Weddle (groin) and offensive linemen Orlando Franklin (concussion) and Trevor Robinson (concussion).
The Oakland Raiders are hoping to share a new stadium with San Diego next year, but first they will attempt to complete their first sweep of the season series since 2010 when they host the Chargers on Thursday night.
Oakland defeated San Diego 23-20 in overtime. But he has shown a knack for delivering in the clutch and did so in overtime, driving the Raiders 67 yards to the winning field goal.
Latavius Murray capped the nine-play, 77-yard possession with a 22-yard touchdown run.
The Raiders had done nothing offensively for most of the night when the defense gave them a needed spark. They are now allowing 203 yards to opposing passers over their last three games. Otherwise, Crabtree’s second half of the season slump continued, as he averaged fewer than 10 yards per catch for the fifth time in his past six games.
The Chargers drove 67 yards and settled for a Lambo, seeking redemption, 48-yard field goal to the tie the game at 20.
The Raiders cut San Diego’s lead to 14-10 with 6:03 left on Janikowski’s 50-yard field goal.
It’s nearly impossible to explain – between the fourth-quarter drive in which Mike McCoy got a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for arguing a non-call and then was bailed out by Josh Lambo making a 53-yard field goal that gave the Chargers a 20-12 lead and then took the points off the board when the Raiders were called for holding on the kick.
