Netflix set to launch in India
As per the Hindu Business Line (HBL) report, Netflix could collaborate with local telecom operator, thereby taking advantage of the growing 4G connectivity access in the country.
The world’s largest video streaming company Netflix is set to launch services in India.
Netflix earlier had plans to enter Asian markets starting with Singapore, Hong Kong, and two other nations in early 2016. In India, Airtel is the sole provider of 4G network.
While the company can be expected to face stiff resistance from pre-existing services – including Bigflix (Reliance), Youtube’s Movie rentals and Singapore based Hooq – Netflix will probably rely upon the cutting edge technology deployed by it along with its considerable experience in handling subscription based streaming to hold its own. Reliance announced its 4G services last week though it is now only available to its employees. The service not only offers content streaming in partnership with major TV networks and movie studios but also produces a number of original shows and has exclusive rights to air some content.
According to an older report from the Times of India, “US-based Netflix, has firmed up plans to enter India by 2016, according to people familiar with the matter”.
As of now, the Indian users willing to use Netflix uses third party services to get around geo restrictions. Considering that it is safe to assume that prices for the Indian market will be lower, the service is not shaping up to be particularly expensive either.
This might be one of the best news global consumer electronics show CES might ever give to most Indian tech enthusiasts- Netflix coming to India.
