Obama says he’ll meet with attorney general on gun options
In his continued effort to curb gun violence and strengthen gun laws, President Obama is set to announce an executive action on gun sales at the top of the new year, CNN reports.
In his weekly radio address Friday, Obama said he’s gotten too many letters from parents, teachers and kids that he just can’t sit around and do nothing.
But White House officials have said there are many political and legal challenges to doing so, potentially opening up Obama to renewed criticism that he is abusing his authority.
Mr Obama said: “The gun lobby is loud and well organised in its defence of effortlessly available guns for anyone”.
“‘You have to handle your transfer through a Federal Firearms Licensee”, Wareham said, referencing Colorado’s law which requires background checks even on private sales.
Obama’s handle got here as a Texas regulation permitting licensed firearms house owners to hold handguns brazenly in public locations took impact.
In 35 years, Cochran says he has never sold a gun without a background check. “The president has made clear he’s not satisfied with where we are”, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said.
A Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted last month in the wake of the San Bernardino, Calif., terrorist shooting, for example, found 53 percent of respondents opposed an assault weapons ban, a record high.
“The fact is, the President’s gun control agenda will only make it harder for law-abiding citizens to exercise their right to self-defense”, NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker. Former Gov. Jeb Bush is scheduled to attend a gun show in Florida Monday, where he will discuss the high marks he has received from the National Rifle Association. One intended outcome is to increase the number of domestic abusers who are barred from owning guns. They included orders to improve information sharing for background checks, maximize enforcement of gun crime laws, and nominate a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
But he does not feel expanding background checks in this way would help stop gun violence or prevent shootings like those in Sandy Hook, San Bernardino and Charleston.
It was the killing of 20 children at a school in Newtown Connecticut in 2012 which many people thought would prove a turning point for gun control in the US.
Ted Alcorn, analysis director for gun control advocacy group Everytown, stated Everytown officers met with Obama in December to make suggestions for government motion. But the law doesn’t clearly define what it means to be in the business of selling guns.
“The timing of the expected Obama move on background checks guarantees it will receive a hostile reaction from gun-rights advocates, thousands of whom will gather next month in Las Vegas for the firearm industry’s annual Shooting, Hunting & Outdoor Trade Show”, he writes.
The Post, citing unnamed people “familiar with the proposal”, said the White House will unveil the background checks and other policy specifics next week.
