Raiders Defeat Chargers in Overtime
Charles Woodson played in his last home game for the Raiders on Thursday night, and it ended with a Gatorade bath. A lot of great players, Hall of Fame players and icons have been a part of that stadium.
Most of this game was tiresome and uneventful, and especially uneventful for Woodson, who was in on no major plays – and had a few bad missed tackles on some others. Because it’s bigger than me, it’s bigger than you, but it ain’t bigger than us. “That’s the way it goes sometimes”.
Woodson, 39, announced earlier this week that he will be retiring following this season and his final game at O.co Coliseum was a chance to express mutual appreciation.
The Pro Bowl safety addressed the Oakland crowd after the win, leading them in a “Rai-ders!”
But it took a couple of crucial turnarounds in the fourth quarter to put Oakland in position to win. Now it’s up to the Raiders’ defense.
It wasn’t pretty. Sloppy play, mounting injuries and flags everywhere made for a somewhat ugly football game on Thursday night. To be able to send him out the right way, to be able to cap off a special evening like this, our last home game of the year… “This was just one where we were going on the fly”.
But that was plenty of time for the Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers to drive for the game-tying field goal that forced overtime.
The mayor also said the city is considering using public financing tools to help monetize revenues from Raiders games up front that would help the team pay for construction costs. “And it doesn’t make it any easier on us to lose another one like that”. “They love this team”. David Carr hit Michael Crabtree on a floater in the end zone on the next play for a touchdown.
The Chargers responded with an 11-play, 53-yard drive that led to a Josh Lambo 45-yard field goal to tie the game at 20-20 and force the extra session.
While Woodson’s future is determined, the team’s remains in flux.
Raiders owner Mark Davis and Chargers owner Dean Spanos are seeking to partner on building a stadium in Carson, which could lead to an unusual partnership between teams that have been fierce rivals for more than half a century.
And as he bid farewell to the fans in Oakland, he corralled them one last time for a chant, “Raaaaaideerrrrs!” The Chargers have gone 4-2 against the spread the season, while the Raiders have gone 2-5 at home. And not just because Oakland beat San Diego at football-a sentence that may never be typed again. The Chargers will travel to Denver in an attempt to play spoiler for the Broncos. Wide receiver Dontrelle Inman caught eight passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
This granted the Chargers an automatic first down, and they initially appeared to capitalize with a touchdown as tight end Ladarius Green was awarded a 30-yard touchdown catch.
