McCaffrey, Stanford throttle Iowa in 102nd Rose Bowl
He broke the record for the most all-purpose yards in a Rose Bowl with 368 and became the first player to record more than 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in a Rose Bowl.
“He earned that trip to NY and nobody on our team would disagree with that”, said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, whose team finished 12-2. One play doesn’t define a game. “He’s very hard to tackle”.
“I just think four teams is too little, regardless of our situation”, Shaw said.
“His heart and his determination are evident in every single practice and in every single game”, Shaw said.
“When he showed up at summer workouts as a freshman, guys were yelling, ‘Heisman, ‘ ” Cardinal center Graham Shuler said.
McCaffrey is a great player.
The Cardinal had the highest-scoring first quarter and first half in the Rose Bowl’s lengthy history.
“It’s so fun when a team can come together”, McCaffrey said. “We knew we were going to have a chance to get guys in space”.
He is the first player with more than 100 yards both rushing and receiving in a Rose Bowl.
“It will give us some fuel going into the offseason and next season”, Beathard said. The game was out of reach at halftime with Stanford being up 35-0.
Dobbs completed 14 of 25 passes. He had 105 yards on four receptions, averaging 26.3 yards per catch.
Stanford began its dominance on the first play from scrimmage.
On the opening snap, McCaffrey took a pass and weaved his way for a 75-yard touchdown, and he was just getting started. We knew their defensive backs and linebackers flew down hard. “It helped us feel confident and settle into the game”. “I do think it’s a shame that a lot of people didn’t get to see him during the course of the year”. He had two touchdowns total, one catching the ball and one on a punt return.
Stanford relied on its defense to extend its lead to 21-0.
Hogan then showed off his elusiveness on a TD run to cap a 74-yard drive, and Meeks erased Iowa’s first solid drive with a TD interception return down the Stanford sideline. Hogan, Stanford’s all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback, also scored once on a keeper. But during that series, Hogan and McCaffrey combined on an unusual play that put their team ahead by 35 points.
Those were the words that Kelly McClain called out to his family and friends after the Hawkeyes had been unable to answer any of Stanford’s first quarter touchdowns. “It worked to perfection”.
Lost in McCaffery’s monster day, Hogan finished with 223 passing yards and a trio of touchdown passes plus 24 yards and another touchdown on the ground. The third was a 42-yarder to Rector with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter.
The Rose Bowl had many University of Iowa fans cheering for their team, but the heartbreaking end disappointed those who didn’t even have a ticket to Pasadena.
Iowa hadn’t trailed by more than seven points at any point in its magnificent season until Friday. King ranked second nationally in the category….
This is Iowa: outmanned considerably outside the comfort zone of the Big Ten, against whom the Hawkeyes’ deliberate and consistent style works well. The Stanford defense recorded 7 sacks and stopped the potent Hawkeyes running attack to just 48 yards.
