Mississippi Tramples Oklahoma State 48-20 in Sugar Bowl
Ole Miss’ star receiver, Laquon Treadwell, who seriously considered OSU when recruited out of Crete, Ill., burned the Cowboys for three touchdowns, on just six catches and 71 yards.
No. 16 Ole Miss cruised to a 48-20 victory over No. 13 Oklahoma State to help the Southeastern Conference improve to 6-2 in bowl games this season with three teams still playing. It’s the first time the Rebels have played in the game since 1970 and the first trip to New Orleans for the Cowboys since 1946.
“I mean these guys wanted to win as bad as the top guy down to the bottom, and it starts with our coaches bringing the intensity every day in practice and our strength coaches getting us prepared”. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Ogbah is a disruptive player on the Cowboys’ defensive line that is the NCAA’s active career leader in sacks with 28. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 302 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
The No. 12 Rebels (10-3, 6-2 SEC) were without defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, who was suspended for the game and declared for the NFL Draft. They recovered an Oklahoma State muffed punt midway through the third quarter and turned it into a 48-yard touchdown run from Jordan Wilkins two plays later. Chris Carson leads the team in rushing with 504 yards, scoring four touchdowns…. behind Walsh’s scoring punch, Oklahoma State ranks No. 8 nationally in red-zone offense…. the Cowboys also rank No. 7 in the country in passing, No. 5 in turnover margin and No. 18 in total offense. The win is their 10th, the first time since 2003 Ole Miss finished the season with at least that many victories.
For the first time in 45 years, the Ole Miss Rebels will be looking for a sweet end to their season.
Following an Oklahoma State field goal, Ole Miss was in position to add to their score before half.
Things fell apart quickly after OSU opened things up with a field goal to go up 3-0.
Treadwell caught consecutive touchdowns to give the Rebels a 24-3 lead with nearly seven minutes until halftime.
The Ole Miss offensive line has successfully limited the damage opposing pass rushers have done this season.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Mississippi learned last season it’s a huge honor and lots of fun to play in one of the major bowl games.
“You study film, you play the percentages”, Freeze said. Even so, results like last year’s loss to TCU still stick with Freeze, a testament to what his older Rebels have overcome in order to achieve success.
“To be honest, I feel like the whole process felt different”, he said.
Quarterback Mason Rudolph finished with 179 yards passing, and backup quarterback J.W. Walsh accounted for the first Cowboys touchdown of the game-a two-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the third quarter. His running ability caused some problems late for Ole Miss, leaving some wondering if he could have provided a spark if used earlier in the game. If Ohio State plays like it did on Friday throughout next season, 2016 could end exactly the way it started. The Cowboys were in the middle of the playoff conversation in November after 10 straight wins, but losses to Baylor, Oklahoma and then Ole Miss exposed their defense.
