Police sergeant shot and killed in California traffic stop
A Hayward police officer was hospitalized early Wednesday morning in a shooting, police said.
Hayward police confirmed only that an officer was shot and that they would provide more details at a 10 a.m. news conference.
Lunger got out of the auto and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the driver shot Sgt.
Dispatch repeats the call and broadcasts their location.
“Shots fired! Shots fired! White Chevy SR…Chevy Silverado truck…he’s still going!”, the officer shouts. The second officer returned fire, but was not hit.
Sergeant Lunger had two daughters in college.
The truck, which matches the suspect vehicle description at the shooting scene, was found about seven miles away on 98th and Edes in Oakland.
The Several law enforcement agencies, Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, Hayward Police and the California Highway Patrol are on scene investigating the shooting. “It is a tragedy that this has happened, that someone has done thos but we are pulling together as an organization”. He said Sgt. Lunger was highly accomplished, promoted to sergeant in 2009 and was also a training officer and member of the gang unit.
“This has been a tremendous loss to myself and to this organization”.
“My heart aches for the family, for all of our officers”.
As a police procession left Eden hospital with Lunger’s body, 16-year-old Carlos Ramirez and his mother Ophelia were there, holding an American flag. “They’re unbelievable”, Ramirez said.
