Mississippi Councilman’s Suggestion to Throw Rocks at Policemen Sparks Controversy
Stokes’ originally made the comments during an interview on Thursday where he said police from surrounding jurisdictions put children in danger as they chase suspects down neighborhood streets. He didn’t have any problems with us from Rankin County coming over there when they had a riot at the jail when they had a police officer shot. “That will send a message we don’t want you in here”, the wannabe thug councilman told WLBT. This is not short of an outright assault upon all who wear the badge.
Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker took to Facebook to send his own message to Stokes. Stokes repeated the suggestion to other local news outlets.
Speaking earlier in the week about police chases crossing into Jackson’s jurisdiction, Councilman Kenneth Stokes publicly stated, “Let’s get rocks, let’s get bricks and let’s get bottles and start throwing them and then they police won’t come in here anymore”.
“I believe it is ludacris for an elected official to make those types of statement”, Michael Guest, the District Attorney for Madison and Rankin County, said.
Jackson mayor Tony Yarber tweeted that while there is a need to demand respect of jurisdictional boundaries, he could never condone violence against officers, according to the Clarion-Ledger. Officers were searching for a shoplifter who assaulted a loss prevention officer at the Walmart in Richland.
Bryant also called for an investigation to determine if Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ remarks “represent criminal threats against law enforcement officers”.
“It was a misdemeanor. We want the same respect that they give to their neighborhoods given to Jackson neighborhoods”.
