Mexico mayor slain a day after taking office
The mayor of a municipality in Mexico has been killed by armed men inside her home, one day after taking office.
The attackers entered her house Saturday morning while her family was present and killed her in the doorway, said Alberto Capella, Morelos state security commissioner, at a press briefing.
With a population of almost 100,000 people, Temixco neighbors the resort and industrial city of Cuernavaca, which has been suffering from many kidnappings and extortion linked to organized crime groups.
Ramirez, like Mota a member of the center-left PRD party, said the suspected perpetrators of the attack – which local media said also left two others dead at the mayor’s home – had already been arrested.
Gisela Mota, 33, the mayor of Temixco, was beaten and shot by four gunmen Saturday, according to TelesurTV.
Gisela Mota waves during her swearing in ceremony as mayor of Temixco, Morelos State, Mexico. Although Cuernavaca is the state capital of Morelos, Temixco is the seat of several state institutions together with the Public Safety Commission, which coordinates state and native cops officers forces.
The statement did not provide further details of the attack.
Mota, who had been a federal congresswoman, was sworn into office on New Year’s Day. She was shot dead a day later.
This a challenge by organized crime.
