Officers who killed man holding phone, not gun, identified
Police Capt. Matt McCarthy of the department’s office of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing said the officers shot at the man because the confrontation was in a residential area and involved a man wanted for attempted murder who they thought was holding a gun. Reinhart said he last spoke to his client on December 17, when Childress was scheduled to attend the Phoenix trial for his verdict of said crimes.
The shooting occurred Thursday as the officers were assisting US marshals in arresting the man accused of multiple violent felonies in Arizona, including attempted murder.
According to the statement, officials later found him outside a home west of downtown while holding an object in his right hand.
Police say that they ordered the suspect to drop the item, but he started walking towards them instead.
Police were searching for Childress because he didn’t show up to the court date to witness his conviction, so a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The two officers then opened fire, fatally striking Childress.
Childress, who was pronounced dead on the scene, was not holding a gun, but a cellphone.
Police on Saturday say 37-year-old Sgt. Robert Bohanon and 27-year-old Officer Blake Walford are now on routine administrative leave. McCarthy, however, said no officers, agents or bystanders were injured.
The officers fired, shooting the man several times and killing him. The incident happened around 2pm, police shoot 1 suspect, no officers hurt.
Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Keith Childress was shot to death New Year’s Eve by Las Vegas police.
