Sugar Bowl: Treadwell, Kelly lead Ole Miss to win vs Oklahoma State
The Rebels’ 34 first-half points tied for the most in the Sugar Bowl’s 82-year history. Defending Oklahoma St.is somewhat complex as they have a successful two-headed quarterback system between Mason Rudolph (3,591 yards, 21 TDs and nine INTs) and JW Walsh (663 passing yards, 13 TDs, one INT/285 rushing yards, 11 TDs). Add in the likely departures of Laquon Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil, along with the already-announced departure of Robert Nkemdiche, and Ole Miss will have plenty of holes to fill between now and kickoff against Florida State Sept. 5. “At 6’5” and 305 pounds, Tunsil was the last person expected to be making touchdown runs. After Ole Miss laid an egg in last year’s Peach Bowl loss to TCU it was fair to wonder if the Rebels brought their best game to New Orleans.
That was the end of the good news for the Cowboys, who were playing in the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1946. “We’re going to have a lot of great leadership next year, and the coaching staff has their feet well-put in this offense and how we can really dissect some teams”.
“I had a pretty good feel for what they would be in”, Freeze said of the play call.
Kelly’s four touchdown passes tied a Sugar Bowl record.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are 10-2 overall and finished 7-2 in Big 12 play, tying for second place in the league standings.
It was a record-breaking night for the Rebel offense, but the defense wouldn’t be outshined, holding the nation’s 18th-ranked offense to its lowest point total of the season.
“I hate to take away from them, but when you get in the game and you get behind by too far and become one-dimensional, for us anyway, it made it hard”, said Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.
In the end, Ole Miss proved they were the better team on the field. Alabama has played in 15 Sugar Bowls and LSU has been in 13.
Ole Miss responded with a field goal of their own, tying the game at 3 a piece. OSU used two late Ben Grogan field goals and a smothering fourth-quarter defensive effort to defeat Texas in Austin, 30-27, on September 26.
This year’s edition of the Sugar Bowl has a pair of teams with tremendous talent.
After the Rebels’ first two drives, in which quarterback Chad Kelly was picked off on the third play of the game and a then a punt on the second possession, they pressed down on the accelerator and didn’t let up.
MS wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (1) pulls in a touchdown reception in front of Oklahoma State cornerback Kevin Peterson (1) in the first half of the Sugar Bowl college football game in New Orleans, Friday, Jan. 1, 2016. He has caught 76 passes for 1,082 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2015 season. The previous time the Rebels defeated four ranked teams in the same season came in 1969, a season that ended with Ole Miss’ most recent Sugar Bowl appearance. So you come up with about 42 to 45 players.
Perhaps not even Kelly, himself, realized the magnitude of his achievements this season until he was in the postgame press conference.
“I enjoyed every minute of that”, Manning said.
Offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil caught a backward pass and ran 2 yards for a touchdown to give the Rebels a 34-6 halftime lead.
