Alabama rolls into CFP National Championship, 38-0
As if playing for the national championship wasn’t enough motivation, No. 1 Clemson (14-0) will be vying for a piece of college football history as well when it meets No. 2 Alabama (13-1) in Glendale, Arizona on January 11 in the title game. Serving at first on an interim basis, he got the job permanently after leading Clemson to bowl eligibility. Ridley looked fantastic against Michigan State, notching a personal highlight reel’s worth of impressive plays.
Connor Cook ended the year with a fizzle in the Cotton Bowl after starting it with a bang in the same stadium.
Jake Coker finished 25-of-30 for 286 passing yards and two TDs in Alabama’s win over Michigan State. Two plays later, Heisman victor Derrick Henry punched it in for the Alabama touchdown. Sportsbook operator CG Technology opened the Crimson Tide as 4.5-point favorites.
Ryan Anderson came alive once again a few minutes later on a sac for a loss of four-yards on Cook. He ran it back 21.
While Saban is chastising reporters and scowling on the sideline, Swinney is dabbing in the locker room and renting out arcades for his players. Coker found Ridley in the end zone.
With Alabama favored by 7 points, Clemson is the underdog for a second straight game.
The fourth sack of Cook was a 10-yarder on an intentional grounding penalty when he tried to chuck the ball as he was driven into the turf by Tim Williams.
Cyrus Jones made sure his name appeared in the scoring summary when he returned a punt 57 yards to the end zone in the third quarter. Alabama led 24-0 with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 26 of 41 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown for the fourth-ranked Sooners (11-2). Henry had five carries for 15 yards.
The sometimes inconsistent signal-caller picked a great time to play his best football. “He’s our quarterback that we’ve hung our hat on here for the last three years”. “We worked our butts off and this is what you get when you work hard”. “It was still a great season, we don’t want to do anything to discredit that”.
It was an emotional Friday afternoon for the Michigan State football team, with coach Mark Dantonio calling a meeting to wrap up the season and allow the seniors to say goodbye. And after stopping the Crimson Tide on its first three possessions, bad things started happening to their defense, too – namely, quarterback Jake Coker started hitting deep balls. “Really, we were just trying to show we were the dominant team, and we did that”. “He had to make the plays because they were there, and he certainly made them”.
“Just got to keep the focus we had in preparation for this game”, Coker said. “He’s a guy that is really special to our team”.
Don’t misunderstand. Watson’s a terrific player and the leader of a terrific team. He’s creative, and he’s played very, very well in huge games. With this win, Saban improves to 9-0 all-time versus his former coaches.
Alabama looked like a team with no weaknesses against Michigan State. Kiffin said this week he has learned a lot from working with Saban and believes he is better prepared to be a head coach.
“They were talking all game and talking before the game in the media and stuff and we took it real personal to deny ’em what they thought they could do”, defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson said. The Crimson Tide are headed to the national championship and MSU is headed back to East Lansing, but that is no reason for fans to hang their heads.
