Australia win second Test over West Indies by 177 runs
Australia dismissed the West Indies for 271 at tea to take a first innings lead of 280 runs in the second Test in Melbourne on Monday.
Earlier, with Smith declaring at the start of the day when his own score was 70 not out, he finished 2015 with 1,474 runs at 73.70 – the most for the year.
Having waited until 35 years of age to win his first Test cap, Adam Voges has wasted no time cementing his place in Australia’s batting lineup by scoring a mountain of runs.
The third and final test will be played in Sydney.
The West Indies were 64 for one at lunch with Bravo on 14 and Chandrika not out 17 to trail Australia by 395 runs.
“You will have to ask the skipper but we will have fresh bowlers with a ball that is probably still reversing and we can get stuck into their tail and see what happens”, Voges said.
“We have been criticised from all different angles but I’ve just stressed to the team to keep faith”, Holder said.
“I’m obviously proud of the way the guys showed some fight in this game”, Holder said.
“‘Lyono’ did what he’s done so well for us this summer, got wickets for us at crucial times. he’s bowled beautifully”.
Australia cruised to victory before tea on day three in Hobart, winning by an innings and 212 runs.
The Aussie bowling attack devastated the Windies on Day 2.
The anger reflected Australia’s frustration at a stubborn West Indies fightback since the tourists were 91-6 in the first innings in reply to Australia 551-3 declared.
Debutant Carlos Brathwaite followed up with the prized wicket of David Warner.
Khawaja shared a quick-fire 77-run stand with Steven Smith before offering a top-edge to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off Holder for 56. But despite their dire position the Windies showed more resolve against the odds on the third day. Darren Bravo was their highest scorer with a total of 81.
The former West Indies skipper, however, admitted that his side were going through hard times and, therefore, called on them to display a concerted effort. “I don’t know. I’m enjoying Test cricket, that’s for sure”, the mild-mannered 36-year-old told reporters. “Something I will hold dear to my heart every second I’m out there with that maroon cap on”.
Pattinson (2-49) returned to account for Kemar Roach (11) and Jerome Taylor was caught by Pattinson off the bowling of Marsh, who completed figures of 4-61 with the game’s final wicket.
West Indies avoided humiliation on day three of the second Test against Australia but are still facing a heavy defeat in Melbourne.
While Holder was expressive, Ramdin played carefully but punished loose balls as he hit eight boundaries.
