Magnitude-6.7 quake hits India’s remote northeast
USGS issued a yellow alert for casualties and damage, with a 35% likelihood of between one and 10 deaths from the tremor.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences’ National Seismology division said the quake was measured at 6.7 on the Richter with its epicenter in Manipur’s Tamenglong district bordering Myanmar. Preliminary readings on earthquakes often are revised as more data come in.

An official at one of the main hospitals in Imphal said more than 50 people had been admitted since the quake with head injuries and limb fractures.
The region has a history of powerful earthquakes caused by the northward collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
People described losing power, being awakened by shouting relatives and by an intense shaking that lasted from 35 seconds to two minutes. The world is dotted with little houses.
Police said several buildings have been damaged in the area. The depth of the natural disaster is believed to be around 34 miles.
People panicked and rushed out of their homes in Gauhati, the capital of Assam state.
