Jan 3, 2016- President Obama has said he wants to take unilateral action to tackle the problem of gun violence in the US.
Obama is taking the action against the backdrop of a relentless succession of shootings, which cast him each time in the role of “consoler-in-chief” to a grieving nation. “That’s because of what we’ve accomplished together over the past seven”, Obama said his weekly radio and Internet address.
Mr Obama is tipped to announce the executive action before his State of the Union address on 12 January.
Gun enthusiast George Anthony said, “I think that we do need stricter gun laws, as far as background checks are concerned”.
President Barack Obama will press ahead with a set of executive actions on guns this week despite growing concerns over terrorism that have dampened some Americans’ enthusiasm for tighter firearms restrictions.
Following weeks of discussions with officials and legal advisers about how he could use his executive powers to circumvent the Republican-controlled Congress, Mr Obama will on Monday sit down with his top law officer to see how he can make it harder for “a unsafe few” to get their hands on guns. On Thursday, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Obama was aware Congress was unlikely to act on gun reform.
