Jets blow playoff chance with 22-17 loss to Bills

“Did we want our division rival at our expense to go to the playoffs on our home field, heck no”. It was all there. The Jets made mistakes all afternoon long.

The good news is the Bills won’t have to play the Kansas City Chiefs next season.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Jets (10-6).

But the gunslinger’s mentality Fitzpatrick has displayed throughout his career came back to bite him not long thereafter.

CHICAGO – Matthew Stafford threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, Calvin Johnson had 137 yards receiving for the Lions. He threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns but had three back breaking interceptions. Fitzpatrick’s one-year deal will expire this offseason, and the Jets reportedly have not yet engaged in talks about an extension.

Darrelle Revis, who spent much of the season proving he has lost at least a step off his otherworldly standard, spent this game getting schooled by Sammy Watkins and then refused to talk about it afterward. Ryan brought a new culture to Buffalo that has resulted in more wins, but he needs more talent on the team to reach the postseason. He can cover, but not the way he once could. Watkins topped 1,000 yards for the year, the 10th Bill to hit the milestone.

And the news for the Jets only gets worse. They were undermined by the Jets secondary weapons, who dropped pass after pass in big spots. In my opinion, this young man is one of the best receivers in football and the league will recognize it next year when he’s healthy for a full 16 games and you’ll see the numbers and you’ll see everything else.

KEY STAT: Buffalo’s production in the second and third quarters while driving into a gusting 30 miles per hour wind. Anyone healthy enough to do that could carry the football 15 times. Chris Ivory rushed 6 times for 81 yards and Stevan Ridley carried 9 times for 29 yards.

Bills running back Anthony “Boobie” Dixon moved the media needles last week when he declared Sunday’s game as the Bills’ “Super Bowl”, hyperbole that Ryan downplayed all week. DE Mario Williams had a sack in what was expected to be his final game for the Bills…. Unfortunately, that’s where the scoring ended for the Jets, and the Bills only recorded another field goal to end the game with a 22-17 victory. Bills beat the Jets 22-17. He was looking for a deal in the off-season, didn’t get it, and it may cost him. It was a tough way to go down for the Jets.

“All you can ask for in this game is an opportunity and as poorly as we played in the first quarter, as slow as we were going there, we picked it up and had an opportunity in the end to win the game”. Rex Ryan swept them out of the playoffs.

If a team is going to dramatically own the time-of-possession war like Buffalo did Sunday – 39:13 to 20:47 – a quarterback and at least one weapon of choice typically has to be in synch.
