Browns fire coach Mike Pettine, general manager Ray Farmer
Both General Manager Ray Farmer and Head Coach Mike Pettine were fired by the Cleveland Browns on Sunday night, following their 3-13 season.
The Browns struggled in the pair’s two seasons in Cleveland, compiling a 10-21 record in that span. Though the team was an outside contender in the AFC North last season, the Browns regressed in 2015 and tied the Tennessee Titans for worst record in the National Football League at 3-13. Owner Jimmy Haslam also announced the firing of Ray Farmer as general manager.
The Browns have whiffed on high draft picks, wasted money on a defense that showed little improvement, and remain at the bottom of one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. We’ve made this hard decision because we don’t believe our football team and football operations were positioned well for the future.
Cleveland’s next coach will be the 16th in franchise history and the fifth since 2009.
Browns tackle Joe Thomas, who has seen five coaches come through the building since 2007, said this was not Pettine’s fault. He took over as the team’s general manager before the 2014 season and drafted two significant first-round busts in Manziel and cornerback Justin Gilbert.
Browns vice president of communications Peter John-Baptiste would not confirm for USA TODAY if Manziel was in Cleveland.
All of the letdowns have led to another reboot of the Browns and Haslam breaking his promise about not hitting the reset button.
Haslam said the team will immediately begin a search for its eighth full-time coach of the expansion era. But after being named the starter for the rest of the season on November 17, Manziel suffered a major setback a week later when he lied about a video that surfaced on social media showing him holding a bottle of champagne. Pettine said he didn’t speak to Haslam.
York, who didn’t speak publicly about the team’s turmoil during the season, chose Tomsula previous year to replace Harbaugh over departed defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and now-Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase. His job security had been in question throughout the fall, even though Browns owner Jimmy Haslam had said at training camp he did not plan to “blow things up” if the season fell short of expectations.
“I don’t look at it that way”, Pettine said.
Manziel was set to start the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he is sitting it out due to being in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Harbaugh won at least 11 games in three of his four seasons as the 49ers coach and took them to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season. “I think we’ve found in life you often learn the hard way, and this has certainly been an example of this”.
The Cleveland Browns reportedly are done with Johnny Manziel.
