Purple kitty may have been used as ‘chew toy’
The 8-week-old kitten that was dyed indigo was found with 20 deep puncture wounds and dropped off at a San Jose rescue shelter. Following the rescue, Smurf was given the gift of love and attention, and the kitten’s story is bringing the problem of animal abuse to light, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
On Thursday, Rudiger said that the animal shelter has already been contacted by concerned people through the email and texts. According to the post, the doctors then repaired Smurf’s hind leg/knee injury, allowing him to extend his hip fully.
“I think there are people who find it amusing to take small, innocent animals and use them as play toys” Rudige said.
“He’s a strong little guy”, the veterinarian told reporters.
Smurf has received offers of adoptions from all over the world – with Good Samaritans offering to fly him as far away as New York, Florida, Brazil and England.
Safe place: Rudiger said that the cat is lucky to be alive. Video at the 9 Lives Foundation Facebook shows him with two furry friends. Thank you to everyone who has called & visited! Smurf will undergo surgery next week to fix his wounds. Nine Lives Foundation said that Smurf and his friend Cherry will be going into foster care together next week!
The vet isn’t sure if the dye will cause permanent harm, although the other wounds should heal with proper care.
A 1.75 pound kitten was rescued by a California animal shelter after he was found with his fur dyed purple and multiple bite marks and open wounds covering his body.
Rudiger told the newspaper she hopes all of the media attention on Smurf can raise awareness for other cats who need homes, and fight against animal abuse and neglect. Calvin took care of Smurf – bathing, shaving and cleaning the kitten’s wounds after he was brought to the Foundation.
