Ford Is Adding Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for 2017 Model Year
Ford has followed up its recent introduction of the third generation SYNC infotainment technology with the announcement that it will come standard on all 2017 models and will include both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
In addition, Ford has announced Sync Connect, which allows you to remotely start, unlock the doors of your auto, as well as checking its fuel level and parked location, all from your smartphone.
Ford’s Sync 3 will soon be offering a lot more functionality.
If your Ford already runs Sync 3, the company will let you upgrade your system with support for these new features later this year. AppLink is similar to CarPlay in that it allows mobile apps to talk directly to the auto, and with the latest version those apps have insight into more vehicle data like position and fuel consumption. The first vehicle to feature the two interfaces will be the new Escape.
The company said that all existing and future models equipped with its Sync 3 connectivity system will support Apple and Google’s platforms. That means iPhone owners can access Siri, Apple Maps and more, while those with Android Auto compatible devices get the Google services suit.
Launched in 2007, Ford SYNC was the industry’s first system to widely and most affordably offer voice-activated technology to control smartphones.
The integration makes it easy to make phone calls, access music, send and receive messages, get directions optimized for traffic conditions and other features – all while keeping your eyes on the road.
For those who are not familiar with Android Auto, the platform allows you to interact with specific Android apps on your Android phone through the car’s touch screen.
