Roethlisberger leads Steelers over Browns 28-12
The Browns (3-13) ended another losing season in disarray and doubt.
Oh, and for all the talk about how Rex Ryan kept his former team, the Jets, out of the playoff for the fifth straight year, don’t underestimate this: Rex also gets to revel in the fact that his other hated team – New England – now has the risky Steelers in the field rather than its perennial doormat.
But for my money, give me the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team with the second-best quarterback in the AFC playoffs, the best wide receiver (non-tight end division) in the AFC playoffs and, depending on the severity of DeAngelo Williams’ injury, the best running back in the AFC playoffs?
With the help of a Jets loss to the Bills, Pittsburgh punched its ticket to the postseason and claimed the No. 6 seed in the AFC. It came after James Harrison intercepted an Davis pass 1 yard deep in the Steelers end zone.
Ben Roethlisberger: The 16 interceptions are the only blemishes on his 2015 performance. Brown is completely uncoverable right now. Owner Jimmy Haslam, who vowed in August that he wouldn’t “blow things up” did just that, ousting Pettine and Farmer after two disappointing seasons. Chris Boswell converted that into a 21-yard field goal and a 28-12 lead with 7:40 remaining.
Antonio Brown caught 13 passes for 187 yards and a TD. He finishes the season with 1,043 yards, the second-highest total for a tight end in Browns history.
He caught a 42-yard pass from Austin Davis at the end of the second quarter, beating cornerback Antwon Blake for the contested ball at the Steelers’ 15. However, their fate will not only depend on their own result today and they need things to go their way elsewhere as well, meaning it should be a tense day for Steelers’ fans watching their own team’s game, as well as listening out for how things are going on elsewhere in the NFL. Roethlisberger completed all 7 of his passes on that series for 74 yards with Brown catching three for 59 yards. Two plays later, Roethlisberger and Brown combined on the touchdown.
And if they play like they did against Baltimore, or even Sunday in Cleveland, they won’t have a long stay in the postseason.
Terrelle Pryor’s first National Football League catch as a wide receiver was an impressive one.
The Pittsburgh Steelers did exactly what they needed to do when they needed to do it. Ben Roethlisberger completed two-thirds of his passes and launched three touchdown passes on the way to the win.
Most assume Gase will bring Manning to the Browns in some capacity considering they’re good friends.
Roethlisberger was picked off by Jordan Poyer in the first half and Robertson recovered Brown’s fumble, forced by Karlos Dansby on the Steelers opening drive. Coons capped off a 17-play, 62-yard drive that took more than nine minutes off the clock. Roethlisberger threw a touchdown pass to Miller, but the Steelers also lost two turnovers in that quarter. He came over from the Carolina Panthers to back up Bell, but between a Bell suspension and Bell’s season-ending injury, Williams has been the Steelers’ lead back much of the year.
Facing another third down, this time a third-and-six, just three plays later, Davis found Barnidge for a six-yard gain. He was then placed in the front seats of a cart and driven to the locker room for further evaluation.
