Four bodies found after canoeists go missing on Wisconsin lake
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said the four men were all from IL and were between 20 and 23 years old. They went looking for them and found their empty canoe.
The friends could see the overturned canoe across the bay. They also noticed some wallets and cellphones that the men had taken out of their pockets and set along the shore, he said.
“They weren’t dressed like they were going for a paddle”, Roberts told WITI.
Dive teams from Walworth County and East Troy found two of the men before nightfall, Roberts said.
As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, two of the bodies had been recovered, and divers were continuing to search for the others in the frigid waters south of Highway J, Roberts said.
An earlier report that four bodies had been recovered was incorrect, Roberts said.
“We have no indication that they are anywhere but in the lake”, he said. “They looked like they were dressed in casual type clothes”.
Two men are dead and two are missing – including two recent New Trier High School graduates – after a Sunday morning canoe trip on a Wisconsin lake.
“At this time there is no reason to believe foul play was involved”, Roberts said.
The town of East Troy is about 60 miles southeast of Madison.
