Coward punch victim dies
The death of a young person is always a tragedy but we are deeply saddened to hear the news that the 18-year-old boy who was coward-punched for no apparent reason has died in hospital.
Two men aged 21 have been charged over an assault in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.
“Cole was a handsome, brave, young man with his whole life yet to be lived”.
Miller was allegedly struck once in the back of the head in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley early on Sunday morning.
Although NightSafe chaplains rushed to his aide and he was taken to hospital immediately, the ABC reports that the young man has died this afternoon.
“It is with deep sadness I announce our 18-year-old son Cole has today passed away as a result of massive brain trauma”, Mr Miller said.
A spokesperson for Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital confirmed to Daily Mail Australia the victim suffered severe facial and head injuries.
Earlier police charged two 21-year-old men with grievous bodily harm.
“Cole was a handsome, brave, young man with his whole life yet to be lived”.
Mr Miller’s father, Steven, is expected to give a brief statement to the media this afternoon. Mr Miller has represented Queensland in under-20s water polo, is a member of the Brisbane Barracudas Water Polo Club and is the younger brother of Australian water polo player and Olympian Billy Miller.
The competition has been cancelled following the attack, as has another tournament in Victoria.
He said Maxwell was alleged to have approached Mr Miller and his friend and asked “if they wanted to fight”.
Police are still trying to determine if the men knew each other.
The teenager’s death was the most tragic of reminders of the consequences a single punch could cause, Acting Inspector Armitt said.
Renata was remanded in custody following a brief appearance in the Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday morning.
