Star Wars: The Force Awakens still rules the US Box office
Of course, the difficulty there is that Star Wars is much less known in China.
And fans who don’t live in California shouldn’t be too upset as the rapper has promised he will be staging “a couple more” screenings in different cities.
While Star Wars might not give up its throne any time soon, films like Daddy’s Home and Sisters have proven to be incredibly strong performers. The comedic drama about the housing bubble collapse slipped just 15% from last week’s start and is up to $33 million domestically and $37.4 million worldwide.
“The Force Awakens” grossed an estimated $88.3 million in the US and Canada, almost meeting expectations of $90 million for the weekend and pushing the J.J. Abrams-directed picture well past the $700 million domestic mark. It was able to reach a running total of $274 million.
Star Wars remained a phenomenon in its third weekend, with estimates bringing its total domestic gross to $740-$743 million, to put it ahead of the $658.7 million gross for Titanic. Globally, “The Force Awakens” stands at $1.5 billion; “Avatar’s” total world-wide gross was $2.8 billion.
Despite its wonky premise, “The Big Short” appears to be an awards season breakout. Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight“, released by Weinstein Co., expanded to nationwide release and collected $16.2 million in third place; it has grossed $29.6 million so far. While spinoff Rogue One is out next December, I nearly wonder if it’s a mistake to release episodes 8 and 9 over Memorial Day weekend in 2017 and 2019. The film can finish with up to $55 million to $60 million in the United States; the budget was $35 million.
The top three is completed by 2012 Bond film Skyfall, which joins Daniel Craig’s other 007 movies Spectre and Casino Royale in the list. On New Year’s Eve alone, Star Wars raked in $34.5 million, according to EW. The film opens in China on January 9. Essentially, it looks unlikely that Tarantino’s latest will be the kind of box office smash that “Django Unchained” or “Inglourious Basterds” turned out to be, but if it makes a good showing in the Oscar nominations in a couple of weeks, it could see a bump.
