President Obama Set To Tackle Gun Control
The president is meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday to discuss a three-month review on how to combat the violence. He will host a town hall addressing gun violence on Thursday evening hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
“That’s especially true for one piece of unfinished business, that’s our epidemic of gun violence”, he said.
So, closing the gun show loophole would not have prevented the shootings in San Bernardino, yet that is what Mr. Obama called for in reaction to the massacre.
“They run background checks here and it’s no different than if you were buying a gun at a gun store, a pawn shop or even Walmart”, he said.
“His first impulse is always to take rights away from law-abiding citizens, and it’s wrong”, Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida, said of Obama on “Fox News Sunday”. Unlicensed dealers are mostly dealers that don’t have a storefront, and are not required to have a license to sell guns because they only sell guns “occasionally”.
Advisers say Obama will also look for other opportunities to keep security issues at the forefront as he tries to ease Americans’ concerns.
Obama could take the less risky path on guns by directing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to redefine its guidance on who is considered a dealer under federal gun law.
Real estate mogul and Republican front-runner Donald Trump said instead of expanding background checks on would-be gun purchasers, the US would be better off improving the mental health system.
He added, “This is going to be another illegal executive action, which I’m sure will be rejected by the courts, and when I become president will be stricken from executive action”.
But more significant is the fact that Trump has no problem with the policy, because that makes him now the third Republican candidate in two days to express support for President Obama’s gun policies, while trashing him on the process.
On Fox News, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie piled on to the president as well, calling Mr. Obama “a petulant child” who reverts to executive actions “whenever he can’t get what he wants”.
Americans are closely split on gun control.
In a bid to reduce gun-fuelled violence, he will take executive action that is expected to make purchasing guns harder for people through the strengthening of background checks. “Right now, they have plenty of rules and regulations”.
