Tom Coughlin won’t address future following loss
Tune in for Sunday’s Philadelphia vs NY football game as these rivals play with nothing to lose.
The Eagles enjoyed winning locker rooms only six other times this season, and that was kept in mind during any celebration of a 35-30 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.
New England Patriots fans are all too familiar with Coughlin’s work, with their team being on the wrong side of Coughlin’s two Super Bowl victories (following the 2007 and 2011 seasons).
It was another tough loss in a season of excruciating losses. However, the season ended the night prior to their nationally televised game when the Redskins defeated the Eagles to clinch the NFC East.
The loss drops the Giants to 6-10, in a season which has been marred by injuries to stars on both sides of the ball.
Earlier in the week Coughlin was noncommittal when asked whether he wanted to return and coach the Giants in 2016, the final year of his current contract.
The heat has been turned up this high on the coach before, but citing their organizational credo of patience and family, owners John Mara and Steve Tisch have always stood by their coach. “I thought the guys were focused, and aside from the one fumble and then the one [tipped] interception, I thought we played a pretty error-free game on offense”. “I’m sure everyone feels like they let that person down”.
Coughlin was one of several head coaches whose job appeared to be in jeopardy entering Black Monday, as the Giants entered Sunday with a 6-9 record and will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
For the Eagles, the win snapped a two-game losing streak and sends them out on a high note to end their rocky season, which came to a head on Tuesday with owner Jeffery Lurie’s decision to fire head coach Chip Kelly.
Opponents threw for 265 yards on average against the Eagles, Manning and Beckham should be able to put up big numbers in this one. “I told the fellas before the game to leave the unknown on the buses and go really have fun”. His 152 catches in his first two seasons is a team record, and his 1,869 yards and 16 TDs rank second. “So that’s still the same mindset and that’s the same mentality that coach Coughlin created here”, he said. “We will fight for him, continue to follow him, and there is no doubt in my mind that he is the man for this job”.
After turning a 14-3 second-quarter deficit into a 27-21 third-quarter lead, the Giants found themselves down 35-30 with the ball and a chance to win the game on their final possession. A number of teams could be looking for new head coaches starting tomorrow, and the Giants will likely be one of them.
The Giants outgained the Eagles 502-435, but they settled for three field goals and had the big turnover.
Manning was 24 of 43 for 302 yards and two touchdowns.
Most notably DeMarco Murray, who ripped off a 54-yard touchdown run on his very first carry after Kelly was sacked. The latter was set up by a 60-yard pass completion from Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford to tight end Zach Ertz.
