San Diego Chargers spoil late lead, lose to Oakland Raiders
Oakland Raiders’ Charles Woodson (24) addresses the crowd after an overtime period of an NFL football game against the San Diego Chargers in Oakland, Calif., Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015.
Woodson is in the third season of his second stint in Oakland.
Woodson mentioned his family and his career for a brief moment, but focused much of his attention to the fans, reassuring the fans in Oakland that they are in great leadership and that they team will be great sooner rather than later. Thus viewers got a treat, in the form of a stirring pre-game speech by the future Hall of Famer.
“This is a very complex situation, and it will take awhile to work out, but I do think (a deal) is possible”, Mayor Libby Schaaf said. Because it’s bigger than me, it’s bigger than you, but it ain’t bigger than us.
“But that’s the way it goes sometimes”.
The Raiders are one of three teams that could be moving to Los Angeles next year.
The Raiders won despite 15 penalties, including five on their overtime drive, and despite getting their only first down of the second half on a 3-yard touchdown drive.
Chargers TE Antonio Gates vs. Raiders: Gates will be needed in-line for the Chargers to contend with Mack, but if the score becomes lopsided, San Diego has no choice but to let it fly.
Seth Roberts then made a juggling 33-yard catch and run to put the Raiders on the 10. He’s a great Raiders.
His last speech at home absolutely will send chills down the spines of those watching. “You guys welcomed me back with open arms as if I never left”.
But for now, the 6-8 Oakland Raiders will be looking to go out on a winning note Thursday night – Christmas Eve – against the 4-10 chargers, in a game which has little other significance considering that both teams are out of the AFC playoff hunt. He also scored on a 22-yard run.
Philip Rivers greets former Oakland Raider Lamarr Houston before last year’s game at Qualcomm Stadium. “Doesn’t make it any easier losing another one like that”.
The Panthers have held the mantra, “Keep Pounding” all season, so do not expect them to take their foot off the gas – even against a Falcons team they beat 38-0 just two weeks ago. “That’s who we had to make plays for, the GOAT”.
The Chargers roared back, and Josh Lambo kicked a 45-yard field goal with 55 seconds left, making it 20-20.
So, while they came and watched a bad game Thursday night, Raiders fans were not there to be sad about it possibly being the final football played at O.Co Coliseum. Check out the ovation Woodson got coming out of the tunnel.
Raiders owner Mark Davis and Chargers owner Dean Spanos are seeking to partner on building a stadium in Carson, which could lead to an unusual partnership between teams that have been fierce rivals for more than half a century.
And as he bid farewell to the fans in Oakland, he corralled them one last time for a chant, “Raaaaaideerrrrs!”
Notice I did not say the Oakland Raiders. But it also featured a safety on a sack by Denico Autry.
San Diego appeared to have the game under control midway through the fourth quarter while up 17-12. That backed the Chargers to the 35 but Lambo made a 53-yard field goal. He leads the Chargers with three interceptions. Chargers wide receiver Dontrelle Inman caught eight passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
