Bill Belichick defends Chip Kelly
Kelly, a New Hampshire native, was sacked on Tuesday, and had a 26-22 record in three seasons, taking the Eagles to the playoffs in 2013.
“Yeah, I would say it’s really disappointing. He does a great job and he’s done a great job with that team”, Belichick said, per ESPN. Pretty much everyone is on a one-year contract in this league.
So Thursday’s defense of fired Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly seemed out of left field. But in the end, he came up small in perhaps the most important aspect of his job.
A day after firing Kelly, CEO Jeffrey Lurie made it clear he wants a coach who can relate to his players and everyone else in the building.
Kelly was head coach and was responsible for all of the team’s personnel decisions. And then when you look at the free agent quarterbacks, I feel like Sam is at the top of the list, The biggest question mark with him was could he stay healthy? “You always want anybody that has been a part of this program to have success later on”.
“I think by and large if you look at the quarterback market he’s going to be the best one out there, anyway”, said Matthews, who has 78 receptions, six for touchdowns. “[2003], that was a good football team”.
The Eagles said offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, 50, the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2011-12, will be the interim coach for the regular-season finale Sunday against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands. “But there are dangers in that when you make significant changes after two 10-6 seasons in a row”.
“It’s not something you are sitting at home thinking about”, Barwin said. “Obviously, you want someone who has a strong work ethic, someone who works extremely hard and has a connection with the players emotionally, as well”. As for Kelly, uncertainty looms; though he’s someone with enough experience to easily find a coaching job even before the start of next season. “It’s different. If you’re set in your ways, maybe close-minded, not willing to change, it’s going to rub people the wrong way”.
If he was hired prior to the 2000 season (those Patriots went 5-11), how long did it take before Belichick felt like his program had been properly installed? It takes some time to go through that. “I think in today’s world, a combination of all those factors creates the best chance to succeed”. “I don’t buy into that”.
One of the names that was constantly linked to Chip Kelly during his coaching career with the Eagles was Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Lurie, team president Don Smolenski and executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman will head up the search committee. “We’re the ones out there making the plays. But that wasn’t the case in ’02”.
