Two-time Super Bowl winner Coughlin resigns as Giants coach
Tom Coughlin has stepped down as head coach of the New York Giants after 12 seasons.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews (81) scores a touchdown against New York Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley (28) during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, in East Rutherford, N.J.
“I met with John Mara and Steve Tisch this afternoon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the organization that I step down as head coach”, Coughlin said in the statement.
“I’m going to give myself a little bit of time”, he said from the postgame podium.
The New York Giants fell to the Philadelphia Eagles today, 35-30, bringing to an end both teams seasons. A Lombardi Trophy every five years is an achievement in which we all take great pride.
“In addition to delivering two Super Bowl titles, Tom represented us with class and dignity, and restored the pride to our entire organization. But finishing the game has been an issue all year for us, and we’ve talked about it, we’ve worked on it, I switched the two-minute drills around in practice to try and make it more of an emphasis, and we’re still working on it”.
He was hired by the Giants in 2004, replacing Jim Fassel.
Coughlin’s call payed off however and Eli Manning got the ball back with just under two minutes for a shot to end the season, and possible Coughlin’s twelve-year tenure as head coach, with a win. “I’m so proud of the guys in that locker room and the way they rallied around Pat”.
“Five games that ended up in the final 30 seconds either one way or the other, and this is probably the exact same circumstance”, Coughlin said.
“I appreciate the support of John and his family and Steve and his family, and of Jerry Reese and his staff. I think our organization is a great representation of what I mean when I talk about ‘team'”. In particular, Jennings, who became the bell cow, has rushed for over 100 yards twice since the committee was ditched, and 432 of his season-ending 863 rushing yards. “We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated”. “I was trying to get after him but that’s tough. I thought the guys up front did a great job protecting me”. “He is an example of how you should handle your job and love what you are doing”.
NY (6-9) reached a new low two weeks ago when Odell Beckham Jr. was suspended for a game due to illegal hits made out of frustration.
It was during those two playoff runs, in the 2007 and 2011 seasons, which resulted in victories in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, which put Coughlin in the same rarified air in team history with Hall of Famer Bill Parcells, who won a pair of Super Bowls with the Giants. Coughlin went 68-60 during the regular season for a career mark of 170-150 and 12-7 in the playoffs.
Tom Coughlin’s time as the head coach for the New York Giants is over. Vereen is yet another weapon in the Giants’ offense that was abandoned for games at a time throughout the season. Jay Glazer said he expected Coughlin to “ride off into the sunset” (though he later clarified that he was not reporting that Coughlin would leave this week).
Up: Bradford’s connections – While next year’s head coach remains a question, Sam Bradford’s stock rose in the game. With the place all theirs, the youngest grandchildren bounded around the end zone and bounced off the field’s walls, until, eventually, they were told it was time to go.
A couple of National Football League owners got the jump on Black Monday by firing their head coaches on Sunday.
It was interesting to watch the Eagles on Sunday and try to pinpoint things that wouldn’t have happened if Kelly was still the head coach.
