Only police can change mindsets of men towards women: Delhi Police Commissioner
Against the backdrop of a bitter standoff between AAP dispensation and Delhi Police, its commissioner B S Bassi asserted that Delhiites are “fortunate” that the city police was not under the jurisdiction of the Delhi government.
Bassi went on elaborate his perception of rapists, saying they do not even see the women in their own families in the correct light.
“The current prime minister has no local interest in Delhi’s affairs. Only the Delhi Chief Minister does so”.
“Pistols will be given to 1,000 traffic officials, especially the ones deployed at certain vulnerable zones, to deal with untoward incidents and emergencies”. Currently, traffic policemen are not armed.
“As a result, the registered IPC (Indian Penal Code) crime rose to 80,184 in 2013, 155,654 in 2014 and 182,644 in 2015 (up to Dec 15)”, Bassi said in its introductory comments. While the highest increase was witnessed in cases of motor vehicle thefts, reported around 40% increase, 16.45% rise was witnessed in robbery and 35.71 in snatching. I have ensured that no police officer hides any truth in this regard. “It is really satisfactory as per the expectation of people of Delhi”, Bassi said.
In view of rising instances of attacks on traffic personnel, the Delhi Police has chose to arm traffic police personnel with pistols. The crime of fake Indian currency note, however, had decreased to 5.20 crore in 2015 from 17.30 crore in 2012. Police solved 3,367 robbery, 64 dacoity, and 415 murder cases.
The number of rape cases came down to 452 in 2009, but rose each year thereafter. “Their self-defence expertise shall be a sure counter to men with sick mindset”, added Bassi.
In 2015, a total of 838 vigilance enquiries have been initiated as compared to 541 initiated in the previous year and disciplinary action was taken against 53 police officials, including one assistant commissioner, records revealed.
While 86.73 % of rape cases took place inside houses, 3.29 % took place inside “hotels and restaurants”.
