CES: 2016 Hands-on with LG’s bendy roll-up OLED screen
LG has built a 18-inch super thin display that uses OLED technology. It had a 30 percent transmittance, which refers to the amount of light that can pass through the screen.
CES 2016 starts this coming week, and it looks like LG will be doubling down on OLED as the next big display technology for the living room.
LG will also be showing off a 25-inch curved display that’s mounted to the interior of a vehicle. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that ginormous 139-inch OLED vertical tiling display that utilizes eight double-sided 65-inch OLED display set in an S-shape pattern.
And now, despite CES 2016’s rapid shift towards more tech you find on the inside of your auto and cars of the future, LG says that it will give its 18in foldable screen its full debut. Sony had also showcased an OLED flexible display in 2010, much before Samsung, which could be wrapped around a thin cylinder and still produce moving images.
The in-cell touch technology has been mainly used for smartphones or tablets, but the company aims to show how it applies the technology to displays for laptops or 23-inch monitors at its booth. Some might wonder ow the foldable, rollable and bendable displays could be put to good use, given the fact that the current displays, which can’t bend, are already great.
Aside from that, LG will be showing off plenty more at CES, including a 98-inch 8K TV, a slew of new UHD TVs and more smart home devices. Samsung and LG, which have been making large-scale investments in OLED production lines, are highly likely to benefit from this decision.
Back in 2014, LG said it was confident it could ship a 60-inch flexible 4K TV by 2017.
In the LCD department, the company revealed a new borderless display.
