CES 2016: Withings Announces ‘Thermo’ Ultra Fast Wi-Fi Connected Thermometer
There are several different options in the market right now, but for those who are looking for a smarter option, you’re in luck as Withings has announced the Thermo. The temporal artery measurement is now considered most accurate and used by medical institutions – and it’s also less invasive and more hygienic.
The Withings Thermo connects via Wi-Fi, and has a 16-sensor infrared array (dubbed HotSpot) that takes your temperature via your temporal artery. Within two seconds they take 4,000 measurements while an algorithm corrects for biases, such as skin heat loss and the ambient temperature, to produce a reliable single temperature reading. Considering most people tend to use thermometers in the home when someone in the family or the inside the house is sick, all it would take is one time not cleaning the thermometer properly to potentially spread around whatever it is that’s causing a temperature rise. And like any modern metrics device worth its weight in plastic, the Thermo can wirelessly share temperature readings-over wi-fi or Bluetooth-to a free Android or iOS smartphone app that can keep tabs on multiple users. This allows users to manage fever episodes by monitoring temperature trends to have a clear idea of what’s what.
Measurement is made via an incredibly simple gesture.
Temperature is detected when the Thermo is placed on the forehead.
A vibration tells the user the reading is complete and results, in either Celsius and Fahrenheit, are then displayed via an LED display on the device. According to Withings, this makes it easier for parents to take the temperatures of their sleeping children in the dark. The device is powered by two AAA batteries that should last up to two years.
Thermo fits into the company’s expanding ecosystem of connected devices, which include a number of activity trackers, connected weighing scales, sleep monitoring products and a wireless blood pressure monitor. Withings is planning on having the Thermo ready for purchase by sometime in the first quarter of 2016, and consumers can expect to pay $99.95 for the device.
