Colts say no announcement on Chuck Pagano’s status Monday
Pagano will be paired with general manager Ryan Grigson for four more years in Indianapolis, as Irsay also said Grigson was given a three-year extension so that he and Pagano are signed through 2019. But when New Orleans beat Atlanta and Houston defeated Jacksonville 30-6, the Colts were eliminated from playoff contention.
Maybe McAfee doesn’t reflect the sentiment of the entire nation, but he’s always been a down-to-earth voice of reason in the Colts locker room.
Pagano reportedly met with owner Jim Irsay on Monday afternoon.
Irsay did better than that. That means the pair will be working together through the 2019 season.
No financial terms were available.
“At the end of the day, whether we have hard decisions to make or he has a differing opinion than I do, I think we both know what both of us are made of at our core and we work to resolve anything to make the best decision for the franchise”, Grigson said.
“These are our guys”. These our guys. These guys are ready. “It wasn’t fan pressure, player pressure or anything along those lines”, said Colts owner Jim Irsay. I don’t know what the future is going to hold, so rather give somebody flowers while they’re living than, you know what I’m saying, the opposite.
The stunning announcement turned conventional wisdom upside down.
While initial reports were indicating that Pagano would be relieved of his duties, the recent news of an extension has easily become the most shocking of the this year’s “Black Monday”.
Head coach Chuck Pagano of the Indianapolis Colts talks to his players during the game against the Tennessee Titans.
Pagano also captivated the football world as he battled leukemia during the 2012 season.
Over four seasons with the Colts, Pagano is 40-23 in the regular season and 3-3 in the postseason.
Somehow, Pagano’s gamble paid big dividends. “I got prepared to play this week, and I felt good, especially being able to take that snap in the victory formation”.
And it may not be enough to save the jobs of Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson.
There certainly has been plenty to celebrate. Grigson’s supporters question Pagano’s ability to get his players to execute. They just didn’t get enough help to make the playoffs and now they’ll wait to find out their coach’s fate.
The rest of the league, however, exposed Indy’s glaring flaws. Look Chuck’s won 44 games in the last four years.
The move comes as a surprise after the Colts went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.
“This year was tough, obviously”, Irsay said. Members of Pagano’s staff preparing for the possibility of both sides moving on Monday, requesting boxes to pack up their offices.
Irsay responded by saying he would never allow a head coach to be bullied.
“Winning five games the last two years, it’s pretty obvious there are going to be some changes made”, he said.
Eventually Irsay came to the conclusion he didn’t need a shakeup or a big-name hire.
“If you think I’m going to have that in my organization, you’re wrong”.
“I’ve had a lot of great days in my life, but none better than today”, he said.
