Pathankot: Fresh gunfire and blast at India military base
Kirby added, “We urge all the countries in the region to work together to disrupt and dismantle terrorist networks and to bring justice to the perpetrators of this particular attack”. Coming a week after PM Modi’s “spontaneous” visit to Pakistan, the attack has triggered a debate over ties with the neighbouring country.
Reports had so far suggested that six militants attacked the base early on Saturday morning, and four died earlier in the gunbattle.
Responsibility for the attack is yet to be claimed and the Indian government has not yet attributed blame. A civilian was also killed during the attack, an official said Saturday.
NSG and army commandos conducted a thorough mopping of the entire area where the terrorists, suspected to be from Pakistan, had been cornered, police said.
Top government sources on Monday informed that both the holed up terrorists have been killed taking the figure to 6 militants involved in Pathankot terror attack. It also said that India and Pakistan should remain “committed” to a sustained dialogue process.
Pakistan is working on the “leads” provided by India on the terror attack on the IAF base in Pathankot, the Foreign Office said on Monday in a statement whose tone was conciliatory. “After UFA you saw Gurudaspur and after Lahore you have seen Pathankot, so under these circumstances first thing this government must do is to call off the Foreign Secretary level talks”, Congress leader Manish Tewari told ANI. He did not give details in an interview with a television news channel TimesNow on Tuesday.
The Indian security forces, meanwhile, continued combing the vast Pathankot airbase, 476km north of New Delhi, three days after armed gunmen stormed it, killing seven military personnel and wounding 22.
Noor blamed “enemies of peace and stability” for the attack, which came amid renewed efforts to lower tension between India and its Pakistan and restart peace talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
“Through timely and prompt action by all agencies, the likely plan of the terrorists to destroy valuable assets of the Air Force has been foiled”, the Indian Defense Ministry had said in a statement at the time. “They haven’t been able to do it in the past and won’t ever be able to do it in the future, ” Hussain said.
