Mourinho insists Chelsea don’t need big signings
Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho has revealed that the Premier League champions require one crucial signing this summer, and suggests that they could be quite in the market.
Cesar Azpilicueta has welcomed competition for his starting role at Chelsea with the club set to bring in a new left-back to replace the outgoing Filipe Luis. “We need to go on the market, we must find a club that accepts an offer by August 31, and we will look for a left back. But other positions we have no space”.
Mourinho confirmed the club was likely to offload defender Filipe Luis and would seek a replacement.
Asked if he was targeting the Champions League this season, he replied: “It’s not my main objective”. I have no other objectives other than to improve, improve and improve. It’s a nice challenge to improve with no new players.
The arrival of yet another player to compete with doesn’t faze Azpilicueta though – he believes competition is something you must embrace at top clubs.
But Mourinho insists that is not the case as he has no room for another midfielder in his squad, but claims his stance will change if a player were to depart.
In line with such a notion, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have all been linked with landing Pedro’s signature this summer – yet it seems Chelsea have reportedly been singled out as the favourites to make the deal happen in the end.
“I think he’s the flawless choice”, Mourinho said.
“You have to fight every day for your place so obviously I will have competition as always and I will try my best to work hard to play as much possible”. In recent years we have seen several high profile La Liga stars make their way to England after falling out of favour at either Barcelona or Real Madrid, and whilst not every example has worked out perfectly, the vast majority of such players inevitably become firm hits within the English game.
Drogba departed Chelsea in 2012 after eight years in London, playing in China and Turkey before rejoining Chelsea last season.
