Gov. Bentley calls on AL’s Congressional Delegation to fight Obama’s gun
Obama met with top law enforcers Monday like Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey, and he’s planning a CNN town hall on the issue Thursday-which seems to speak volumes, Politico reports.
President Barack Obama, who has repeatedly expressed frustration with gun violence in the USA, will talk about the steps during an appearance at the White House on Tuesday.
The new guidance from that bureau is created to require more such sellers to conduct background checks, even if they’re doing business only at gun shows or online.
The White House also said Obama is planning to ask the U.S. Congress, now controlled by Republicans who oppose new controls on guns, to invest US$500 million to address mental healthcare issues. But gun-control advocates say that many gun sellers who sell firearms in informal settings don’t register as dealers.
One of the efforts is to close the so called gun show loophole requiring private dealers to obtain a license and conduct background checks. The FBI will also overhaul its background check system and add more than 230 additional examiners to process these background checks.
The executive actions on gun control fall far short of what he and like-minded politicians attempted to accomplish with legislation in 2013, after a massacre at a CT school that shook the nation’s conscience.
“This is not going to solve every violent crime in this country”, he said on Monday evening. It’s a shrewd tactic on the president’s part to force Republicans, who often blame mass shootings on mental illness and not the guns used in the incidents, to put their money where their mouths are.
Last month, Murphy organized a letter calling on the president to explore and enact executive action on guns.
Harris said from what he’s seen of Obama’s plan it’s “common sense”. They wanted that not necessarily because it would have prevented the shooter in Newtown from getting a hold of his mother’s guns, but because it would make it harder for the wrong people to get guns in general.
They are to be formally announced by the President later at the White House.
“I believe the president’s executive order is unconstitutional, and is another power grab by the president”, he said.
On Capitol Hill, GOP leaders have already vowed to block funding for as much of the president’s plan as possible. We’ll be making sure that people have a very clear understanding of what can make a difference and what we can do.
“It is my strong belief that for us to get our complete arms around the problem, Congress must act”, Obama said on Monday.
