It was unclear why she was brought to Los Angeles and where she would be taken next.
“It was proven that they (Ethan and Tonya Couch) entered the country illegally”, the official said.
A police report says 18-year-old Ethan Couch and his mother stayed at the Los Tules resort from December 20 to December 23, but were asked to leave because the condo’s owner was coming in for Christmas.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to ABC News that she is in segregation, which means that she is effectively in solitary confinement.
It has since emerged that Couch and his mother were tracked to the holiday town of Puerto Vallarta after using a phone to order Domino’s Pizza while in hiding; the phone was tracked, and the U.S Marshals Service quickly told authorities of its location.
This Dec. 28, 2015 photo released by Mexico’s Jalisco state prosecutor’s office shows a youth identified as Ethan Couch after he was taken into custody in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She was charged last night with hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Bond has been set at $1 million for the mother, who may not arrive in Tarrant County until Friday, local TV broadcaster WFAA cited county prosecutors as saying.
Charges were filed against Tonya Couch, 48, of Burleson late Wednesday. Jordan said the timing of Couch’s return to Texas is contingent on when Los Angeles County schedules an extradition hearing.
She is accused of aiding her son to flee to Puerto Vallarta, said Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson on Thursday.
It was not immediately clear why Tonya Couch was not included in the judge’s injunction.
She was deported late Wednesday and flown to Los Angeles, where she’s being held in jail. He could be held in Mexico for at least two weeks. During his 2013 trial on drunken-driving charges – a crash that left four dead – a defense witness testified that Ethan was afflicted with so-called “affluenza”, meaning his irresponsible behavior and lifestyle were a product of his affluent upbringing and “profoundly dysfunctional” parents.
Ricardo Ariel Vera, the representative of Mexico’s immigration institute in Jalisco state, said the mother and son were being held at immigration offices in Guadalajara and would be returned to the United States aboard a commercial flight to Houston.
Lawyers for Ethan Couch won a delay in his deportation based on a constitutional appeal in Mexico that could lead to a weeks-long legal process.
That official tells AP reporter Mark Stevenson that a judge has agreed to hear arguments on Couch’s appeal.
Ethan Couch, who was tracked to Mexico after violating his probation in the deaths of four people in 2013 while he was driving drunk, was being detained in Mexico City on Thursday, officials said. A conviction could result in between two and 10 years in jail.
At this point, the American public is so sick with the idea that Ethan Couch got away with murder, and they are looking for blood.
On Aug. 10, Tonya Couch sold her 3,964-square-foot house at 1719 Burleson Retta Road in Burleson, deed records show.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Eugene Hwang said Thursday that he couldn’t immediately comment.
