Carlos Condit considers retirement after loss to Robbie Lawler
UFC President Dana White said he scored Saturday’s UFC 195 main event in favour of Carlos Condit after an epic battle with Robbie Lawler, and also confirmed Stipe Miocic will be given a shot at the heavyweight title following his victory over Andrei Arlovski.
With the win, Lawler defends his belt for the second consecutive time and collects his fifth win in a row.
Condit, the former interim welterweight champion, who lost his share to then-champion Georges St-Pierre three years ago, was more impressive in this title chance. Lawler won by decision after five rounds, in which he landed half the hits Condit threw at him, although he probably was more accurate. You want to go out there and you want to be sharp and you want to execute your game plan and go out there and get it done fast. “I wasn’t going to say no. We are on the same page, Stipe”. “I felt like I had three rounds in the bad, but that’s why you don’t leave things to the judges”, he said in an interview according to MMA Junkie. “There were two winners tonight”. Look for Condit to use his craftiness early to confuse and disrupt Lawler’s rhythm with step-in elbows, rangy kicks, and tight, technical striking.
Larkin has been undefeated since dropping to welterweight, most notably defeating John Howard at UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Siver. Great fights shouldn’t be marred by suspect decisions, fighters shouldn’t be afraid to go the distance and 10-9 shouldn’t be the score assigned to the vast majority of rounds, especially considering how distinctly different rounds often receive the same score. I don’t know, I came up short and tonight was kind of a do-or-die moment for my career, I feel like. Our own Wrestling Inc coverage had it listed as a 10-10 draw, as the two went back and forth with strikes, finding brief stints of success, but never really damaging the other fighter.
But Condit showed every bit as much talent, courage and resilience on this night as the champion did. Lawler and Condit established a lofty benchmark for the best fight of 2016 with their thrilling draining slugfest.
Condit said he believed he broke a toe in the bout.
“Carlos can do it all”, Lawler said.
Lawler’s matchup with Condit only underlined his reputation as a tenacious veteran willing to do anything to preserve the title that he finally won 12 years after his first UFC fight. It is definitely worth noting a fighter’s weaknesses, but it is not something that Lawler would do based off of his fighting style and past fights.
Off an excellently timed combination, Condit’s uppercut was able to drop Lawler to the canvas before tagging more punches that were augmented by a straight right.
