Body of man decomposed in car with small arsenal at home
After his body was discovered on Friday, police searched Lash’s home and removed at least $500,000 worth of guns and two tons of ammunition from the house.
Veteran defense attorney Harland Braun represents the man’s fiancée Catherine Nebron and identified him as Jeffrey Alan Lash.
Shirley Anderson, 93, told reporters that although she was a longtime partner of the man’s deceased father, she didn’t know much about him because he mainly kept to himself.
Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said the man, whose name has not been released, was already decomposing when found. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday or Wednesday. He said, “Nebron parked the vehicle on Palisades Drive and left it” with the body inside.
While there is no absolute limit to the number of guns a person can legally own in California, LAPD spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado said investigators will check who was the registered owner of the weapons and if any of the firearms have been linked to any crimes.
“He was either into doomsday survivalism, gun collecting or both”, Hayes said, adding that the man appeared to be wealthy.
Several people who live in the area where the body was found said the man was known only as “Bob” in the neighborhood and described him as a gun fanatic who claimed to have worked covertly for the government.
Lash told Nebron the government agencies would take care of his body and the items in the home, so Nebron and her friends took a trip to Oregon, distraught.
“One of the mysteries of this guy is who he really is”, Braun told the L.A. Times.
Anderson said that Lash, the son of a microbiologist, was set to follow in his father’s footsteps and enrolled at UCLA in the 1980s to study to be a scientist. He never told her what he did for a living or where his money came from, she said.
Anderson said Lash was sick and at one point sought holistic medicine for treatment.
The 1,200 firearms found at the man’s home included handguns, rifles and shotguns, police said.
She also didn’t know he collected guns, but said he would often go to gun shops. “He was not very forthcoming about what he was doing”, Anderson explained.
‘He had to be doing something to collect all those guns.’.
